Lab Philosophy

In addition to our lab mission, our goal is to conduct science at the highest level possible. We like to think that we do the best science we can do, especially when developing new methods. However, there are rules and expectations that go along with being a successful laboratory.

Responsible and Reproducible Science

  • We only publish the highest quality work, as reflected in our publications
  • We take all our work across the finish line – our work isn't complete until it's outside our lab
  • Ideas are the wellspring of science, and we cultivate them collectively
  • Each of us seeks to create an inviting atmosphere for everyone on the team
  • Our lab is a soggy lab where we equally value pipetting and computation
  • Mentorship is provided via regular communication and clear expectations
  • We celebrate all our successes and publicize our achievements

  • We are each accountable for our work, and seek to nurture an environment where we can do the best work possible
  • Since we work with pathogens, it is a core part of our culture to follow safety standards, established protocols, and best practices in all our research
  • All our lab's software is freely available, open source, thoroughly documented, and well maintained
  • Every lab member must be a good steward of their own data and code
  • We value correct and reproducible science above fast and flashy science

Lab Culture

We have an awesome lab culture (that’s not just a microbiology joke!). One of the lab’s defining characteristics is that we work with large amounts of data. And if a picture is a thousand words, then video should be a few orders of magnitude larger in word count. So rather than give you a description of our lab culture, have a look at our yearly lab videos instead.

Happy 6th labiversary! This year's lab video, "The World of Laboratory Scientists," is a parody of a David Attenborough nature video. We hope you enjoy the video!

Happy 4th labiversary! We themed our annual video this year off of the song Ten Duel Commandments from the popular Broadway musical Hamilton created by Lin-Manuel Miranda. We hope you enjoy the video!

The lab created this video during the COVID-19 quarantine to celebrate the third anniversary of the Wright lab. We themed it after the introduction to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood which was filmed in Pittsburgh. Special thanks to Andrew Beckley for video editing. We hope you enjoy the video.

April 1, 2019

The lab put together a video to celebrate the second anniversary of the Wright Lab! Many thanks to Maria Bond for the video editing and the entire lab for contributing content. We hope you enjoy the video.
